Over 200 people have expressed interest in Mason County Public Utility District No. 3’s community solar program. The utility is only the third in Washington State to launch such a program, after Seattle City Light and Clark Public Utilities.
Under the new program, customers may purchase up to 10 solar units for $100 a piece, with each solar unit constituting about one-tenth of a solar panel.
Customers keep all the energy their unit produces, with a year’s worth credited to their November bill, while also benefitting from federal income tax credit (30 percent of their total investment) and a Washington state incentive of $1.08 per generated kilowatt-hour until 2020.
